What Happened to Proper Writing?

I was reading one of the blogs I follow and Melinda of Finding the Humor mentioned about her daughter mispelling the word barbecue chips. Thus, it prompted me to write this post although this subject has been on my mind for sometime now.

If you are like me, you probably hate seeing annoying e-mail messages or letters that CoNs!sT oF ImPRopER wR!TinG L!KE ThIs or ALL CAPS LIKE THIS or e-mail msg using txt lnguage abbrv. But, some people LOVE it -they use it, are probably addicted to it, and generally can’t seem to write an e-mail using proper language and spelling.

Lately, I have been noticing that a great number of people (mostly teenagers) have given up on the proper use of their own language while writing e-mails and letters. I find it very annoying when people use the letter z to replace the (last) letter s in a word like what Melinda’s daughter did with the word chips. I really hate to sound so old school but I think that texting and Instant Messaging have left a lot of people with very poor spelling and punctuation. Don’t get me wrong, I love texting and IMs and I use text language abbreviations as well but not when I write e-mails or write on my blog!

I honestly have seen a lot of people who don’t know how to spell anymore because they use text language so much. I even received a business e-mail that goes like this:

Gud day Ms. Joy! Pls give us two weeks notice to make sure that we can complete the order before your event. By the way, your making your own design right? If so, we can give you more discount to…

Did you notice the spelling of “good”? What about when she wrote “your” instead of “you’re” and “to” instead of “too”? It’s kind of scary to see all this happening so much. But I guess it’s a wake-up call for parents to monitor their children closely to make sure that they know the difference between text language and proper English. I can’t imagine what my Small Fry’s generation’s going to be like… (*sigh)
