What’s in our Camera Bag?

I have had many people ask me what kind of camera we use to take the photos featured on this site and on my facebook page. They often ask if it’s one of those big black professional ones that take really good pictures?

Yes, we have DSLR – a Canon 5D Mark II. However, it’s not just the DSLR but the photographer is the one who takes the good pictures! In our case, that’s my husband – not me! No matter how advanced or expensive your camera is, you still need to be responsible for getting it to the right manual setting, to the right place at the right time and pointing it in the right direction to get that perfect photo you want.

You could have the best equipment available but if you don’t have the eye for photography, then it doesn’t really matter. If you don’t know how to make manual adjustments on your camera, then you still won’t get good photographs.

We own four lenses and a flash: Canon 24-70mm f2.8, Canon 70-200mm f4 IS, Canon 50mm f1.4, Canon 85mm f1.8, and the Canon Speedlite flash.

For Christmas, we just recently bought the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and Canon 35mm f/1.4L and after spending over $3,000 in those two lenses, I seriously need to learn how to use our DSLR!

So when people ask me if they should invest in a DSLR, I always say yes- BUT only if they’re willing to learn how to use it. If they’re just going to shoot using the automatic setting, then I think it’s not worth spending that much money. If they’re like me who doesn’t know (and doesn’t have time to learn) how to use the manual setting, then I highly recommend just getting a good point and shoot camera like my Canon S95.
